Your Home First Aid Kit: A practical guide to the remedies every mother should know.

One of the things I love most about homeopathy is that it puts power back into your hands. As a mother, there is nothing quite like feeling equipped and confident when your child is unwell. Knowing you have safe, gentle tools at your disposal means you don't always need to reach for the medicine cabinet or head straight to the GP.
Acute homeopathy covers the treatment of sudden, short-term illnesses and injuries, and it is something any parent can learn. This guide will walk you through some of the most useful remedies to have at home, what they're good for, and when to reach for them.
Remedies for Childhood Illnesses
Children respond beautifully to homeopathy, often quickly and gently. These five remedies are ones I'd encourage every mother to keep in her home kit.
Remedy 01
Belladonna
Best for: sudden high fever, throbbing headaches, ear infections
Belladonna is your go-to when illness comes on fast and furiously. Think sudden, intense symptoms: a fever that spikes quickly, a bright red face, eyes that are glassy or sensitive to light, and skin that is hot to the touch. The child may be restless and a little delirious. If your little one goes from fine to burning up in a matter of hours, reach for Belladonna.
Remedy 02
Chamomilla
Best for: teething, colic, extreme irritability
If there is one remedy that has saved the sanity of countless mothers, it is Chamomilla. It is the remedy for the child who is utterly inconsolable: screaming, arching their back, impossible to please. One cheek may be red and hot while the other is pale. They want to be carried and then scream to be put down. Sound familiar? Teething, colic, and earache with this kind of frantic irritability all point to Chamomilla.
Remedy 03
Aconite
Best for: the very first signs of illness, croup, shock and fright
Aconite is best used at the very onset of illness, ideally within the first few hours. If your child wakes in the night with a sudden croupy cough, or comes home from school clearly coming down with something after being caught in the cold, Aconite can stop it in its tracks. It is also a wonderful remedy for fright and shock, particularly for children who are anxious, fearful, or restless after a frightening experience.
Remedy 04
Apis Mellifica
Best for: insect stings, allergic reactions, swollen and puffy skin
Made from the honey bee, Apis is the remedy to reach for when there is swelling, redness, and stinging pain — much like a bee sting. It is brilliant for insect bites and stings, hives, and any kind of allergic reaction where the skin is hot, puffy, and sensitive to touch. The affected area often feels better for cold application. A must-have for the summer months, especially with little ones who love being outdoors.
Remedy 05
Pulsatilla
Best for: colds with thick yellow-green discharge, ear infections, clingy and weepy children
Pulsatilla is a gentle, beautiful remedy and one of the most commonly used for children. The key picture is a child who is soft, tearful, and wants to be held, they feel better for fresh air and worse in a warm room. Colds that have moved past the initial stage and settled into thick, bland, yellow or green mucus often respond well to Pulsatilla. It is also a wonderful remedy for ear infections, conjunctivitis, and digestive upset after rich food.
Remedies for Postpartum Mothers
We spend so much time preparing for birth and for baby, but mothers need care too. These remedies can offer gentle but meaningful support in the early postpartum period.
Postpartum Remedy 01
Arnica Montana
Best for: physical recovery after birth, bruising, soreness, exhaustion
Arnica is the great healer of trauma and physical shock, and birth, however wonderful, is a major physical event. Whether you have had a straightforward delivery or a more difficult one, Arnica helps the body recover from bruising, soreness, swelling, and the sheer exhaustion that follows labour. Many midwives and doulas now recommend it routinely. Start taking it as soon as possible after birth for the best results.
Postpartum Remedy 02
Pulsatilla
Best for: baby blues, emotional sensitivity, breastfeeding difficulties
Pulsatilla appears again here, because it is such a fitting remedy for the emotional landscape of new motherhood. If you find yourself tearful without knowing quite why, overwhelmed, needing reassurance, and feeling better for a walk in fresh air or a good cry, Pulsatilla may be just what you need. It can also help with breastfeeding difficulties and hormonal fluctuations in the early weeks. You are growing into something new. Be gentle with yourself.
Remedies for Accidents and Injuries
Children fall, bump, scrape, and bruise. It is part of how they learn about the world! Having these remedies to hand means you can respond quickly and calmly.
Accident Remedy 01
Arnica Montana
Best for: bumps, bruises, falls, sprains, shock after injury
Arnica is the first remedy to reach for after any bump, fall, or physical injury. It reduces bruising, swelling, and soreness, and helps the body process the shock of an accident. Give it as soon as possible after the incident. It works beautifully for the child who has taken a tumble from their bike, knocked their head, or had a sporting injury. Keep it in your bag as well as your medicine cabinet and you will be glad it is there.
Accident Remedy 02
Hypericum
Best for: nerve pain, crushed fingers or toes, cuts and lacerations
Hypericum is often called the Arnica of the nerves. Where Arnica is for bruised muscle and tissue, Hypericum is for injuries involving nerve-rich areas such as fingertips, toes, the spine, and the tailbone. If your child traps a finger in a door, or falls on their coccyx, Hypericum is the remedy to reach for. It is also excellent for clean cuts and puncture wounds, and can be used as a topical lotion on wounds that are healing.
Building Your Own Home Kit
You don't need a huge collection to get started. A handful of well-chosen remedies including Arnica, Belladonna, Chamomilla, Aconite, Apis, Pulsatilla, and Hypericum will cover a huge range of everyday situations. Most good health food shops and homeopathic pharmacies stock these in 30c potency, which is the most versatile for home use.
And remember, if you would like to learn more about how homeopathy could support your family, or if something doesn't resolve as quickly as you'd hope, I am always here to help. A consultation gives us the chance to look at the whole picture and find the remedy that is truly the right fit for your child or for you.
